Rodríguez' Goal

James Rodríguez 29' Goal v. Uruguay

Abel Aguilar made a header back in off the Uruguayan clearance. James Rodríguez took it down on his chest at the edge of the box and without waiting for the ball to hit the ground he turned right around and put it in off the crossbar.
After growing each day without relenting, this list will begin to shorten as non-contenders are eliminated in these knockout rounds.
Now James Rodríguez is the leading goal scorer of the tournament on assists.

Race for the Golden Boot 2014: End of Group Play

This is revised scorers' sheet in light of the end of group play. I also removed Suarez, who had been banned. I will continue to pare out players who are not currently leading if their team goes out of the tournament.
I have also become aware of the tie-breaker rule that if players come out even on goals, assists are counted so I have included assist totals for anyone with the goals or more.
This messes with things a bit, because only Müller has an assist of all those with four goals so he jumps back to the lead. Benzema and Rodríguez jump to the lead of those with three goals because they each have two assists, which means either of them would go directly into the lead if they scored goal first, which could well happen for Rodríguez if Neymar falls to score in their opener, because Uruguay will undoubtedly be struggling due to the suspension of Suarez. Müller is still on form to take back his place should he lose it and Messi will probably need to continue to score like a madman if Argentina is to continue. That's all I have.
Enjoy the Cup!

Cristiano Ronaldo 80' Goal v. Ghana

This appears to crush the hours of Ghana and secure the places forward for the US as well as give the ballon d'or winner for this year a goal to send him out.
Off a corner, a Ghanaian defender heads the ball straight up and he when it comes down, the goalie, under pressure pats it down, just at the feet of Cristiano Ronaldo, who blithely and without apparent feeling powers it to the far corner through three defenders.

Asamoah Gyan 57' Goal v. Portugal

I have seen no reason to count own goals, mostly because I believe no keeper that remains in the tournament will compete for the golden boot, not with this kind of scoring. I'll merely mention Portugal's first goal was ruled an own goal by Ghana's keeper.
Now on to Gyan's equalizer.
Kwadwo Asamoah, running down the end of the box, put in a cross with the outside of his left foot that struck Asamoah Gyan for the header at the far post. This beauty gives Gyan the most World Cup goals ever for an African and two this World Cup.

Thomas Müller 54' Goal v. USA

The Germans took a short corner, that went back to Klose who put in a cross that Mertesacker headed toward goal, Howard making a great saving punch of a clearance, but it fell to Thomas Müller, who bent it through a number of defenders and past the scrambling Howard.
This is Müller's fourth goal of the tournament, giving the previous golden boot winner a real chance to repeat.

Javad Nekonam, being the just barely onside while four of his compatriots were not, came back for the long ball down by the byline and put in a cross found space for a cross back to Reza Ghoochannejhad, who tapped it in at the far post.
This is Iran's first goal of the world cup and a nice bit to send them home, unless they can manage a bit more.

Edin Džeko 23' Goal v. Iran

From ten yards outside the box, when no one could have reasonably expected him to, with four Iranian defenders within ten yards and runners on the wings, Edin Džeko struck with his weak left foot and bounced the ball off the right post and in, with no chance for the keeper.
It's only too bad he couldn't do it earlier, when it might have mattered.

Marcos Rojo 50' Goal v. Nigeria

After four straight goals from Messi for Argentina, Marcos Rojo found the one to put them ahead in the 50th minute. Ezequiel Lavezzi put in the corner kick and Ezequiel Garay got the ball down with his header, which deflected off Rojo's outstretched knee. It ended up being mostly a right-place-right-time situation for Rojo, but that's his job and he did it splendidly.

Ahmed Musa 47' Goal v. Argentina

Again Nigeria takes less than five minutes, not counting halftime, to even it up and put the pressure on Argentina. Ahmed Musa received a clever through ball from , who held the ball up just right and put Musa through. But the quality is in the finish, because Musa never got past his two Argentinean defenders, but merely pulled up, letting them rush ahead a yard or so and found the slightest angle to beat the keeper at the nearer left post.
And thus is the tally:

Lionel Messi 45+1' Goal v. Nigeria

On a free kick from about ten yards outside the box a little to the right of the edge of the goal, Lionel Messi curled the ball over a five man wall and into the top corner with perfect efficiency. That puts Messi up with Neymar, having four goals to the golden boot and we're not even out of the group stage.
